The Golden Ghetto: The American Commercial Community at Canton and the Shaping of American China Policy, 1784-1844
Published in Hardcover by Lehigh Univ Pr (May, 1997)
Average review score:

The Golden Ghetto by Jacques M. DownsMany readers--not just history buffs--will find The Golden Ghetto: The American Commercial Community at Canton and the Shaping of American China Policy, 1784-1844 fascinating and enlightening. Jacques M. Downs' comprehensive study of American merchants involved in the China trade during the first sixty years of U.S.-China relations, published in 1997 after a lifetime of exhaustive research, is now the definitive work on this topic. The Golden Ghetto is divided into three sections: (1)an account of the American community at Canton [or Guangzhou] under the restrictive Canton System established by Chinese officialdom to buffer the Central Kingdom from the potential harm of foreign activity and influence; (2) a detailed study of American firms and some 200 merchants involved in the China trade over six decades; and (3) an exploration of the path to the first Sino-American treaty--the 1844 Treaty of Wanghsia [Wangxia] negotiated by lawyer, politician, and diplomat Caleb Cushing after the Opium War (1839-42). Focusing on individual actions and attitudes--which Downs has culled from a wealth of sources including letters, diaries, and company histories--his presentation takes on a personal tone, occasionally reading more like a novel than a work of history. At the heart of his account is American trade in tea and silk, and increasingly in opium in the early 19th century. Downs does not mince words in condemning opium traders regardless of their nationality and the deleterious effects of the opium enterprise, but at the same time he explains how opium trade profits came to form the financial bedrock of the foreign community at Canton. He argues persuasively that American merchants with direct personal experience in China, and to a lesser extent missionaries, had a significant influence on official U.S. China policy. Readers familiar with U.S.-China relations in the 20th and early 21st centuries, and in particular with the proliferation of American business interests in China in the past two decades and with the political implications thereof, will find that Downs' study resonates with contemporary as well as historical relevance.

You will never be the same after experiencing this "Glory"This is an amazing account of the way God blesses his children who dare to spend time seeking Him with their whole heart. The miracles of gold dustings and healings are prevalent and very real. The experiences encountered make one hungry for more of God's manifest presence. God longs to bless His people and this book is a testimony to that fact. God is making his presence known in ways that cannot be explained away by skeptics.

A GREAT book! The book THE GOLDEN GOBLET is an great book for kids. It is about an orphan boy named Ranofer. After his mother and father die, Ranofer is forced to live with his half-brother, Gebu. Ranofer labors at the gold smiths shop and comes home every day to find a half-loaf of bread. Throughout the whole book, Heqet and Ancient are becoming Ranofer's family. Ranofer learns to trust in them for help and encoraging. I would give this book 5 stars. The Golden Goose Book: A Fairy Tale Picture Book
Published in Hardcover by Clarion Books (September, 1992)
Average review score:

Four beautiful retellings of classic tales. Two of my favorite nursery stories growing up were "The Three Little Pigs," and "The Three Bears." Imagine my delight at finding a book which not only has these two classic tales, but, "The Golden Goose," and "Tom Thumb" as well. They are retold beautifully, the writing is emotional and reminiscent of nursery rhymes. The book was originally published in 1905, and the pictures are totally recognizable as being of that era...detailed and descriptive of the story. I can hardly wait for my daughter to be old enough to enjoy this book as much as I do!

The Golden Gryphon Feather: The Kaphtu Trilogy - Book One
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (March, 2003)
Average review score:

Fantastic adventure in the ancient world. The Golden Gryphon Feather originally appeared in the late '70s in the famed DAW science-fiction gold-spined pulp paperback editions. The coarse pulp pages, internal drawings, heroic cover art and cover blurbs were all hallmarks of fantasy of the time that DAW publisher Donald A. Wolheim, formerly of ACE Books, rendered classic and distinctive. Two more fantasies by Richard Purtill followed in DAW editions, creating in retrospect, the Kaphtu Trilogy. The other two volumes, The Stolen Goddess and The Mirror of Helen have different cover artists, but recognizably reflect the DAW style.
The 2003 edition of the Golden Gryphon Feather brings the trilogy back again, this time in acid-free paper and quality trade editions, with the following volumes due out in late 2003. (For a comparison of the editions, see the authors website at alivingdog.com). Fans of the Kaphtu Trilogy will rejoice to return to the Bright Land with these new editions.
